How to Become a North Dakota Notary:

North Dakota has minimal eligibility criteria for becoming a notary. The process is simple and cost-effective. Click here to see the eligibility requirements for becoming a notary in North Dakota.

To become a notary in North Dakota, follow the steps listed below:

  1. Order a four-year, $7,500 North Dakota notary bond. 

    Notaries in North Dakota are required to provide proof of a $7,500 notary bond. The notary bond is required to ensure that the notary performs his or her duties according to North Dakota notary law. Click here to purchase a notary bond.   2. Complete a Notary Public Application.

    Complete a notary public application on the North Dakota Secretary of State’s FirstStop Portal.

  3. Take the oath of office.

    Take the oath of office before a notary public. The oath of office form is printed on the second page of the notary application.

  4. Submit your application.

    Mail the original application, notarized bond, and $36 filing fee to the North Dakota Secretary of State at:

  5. Purchase a notary stamp.

    Once your application is approved, the North Dakota Secretary of State will provide your Certificate of Authorization to Purchase Notary Stamping Device form. This form will allow you to obtain a notary seal.

  6. Submit the Verification of Notary Public Stamping Device.

    After you receive your notary seal, return an impression of it on the Verification of Notary Public Stamping Device form to the North Dakota Secretary of State.

  7. Wait to receive your commission certificate.

    After your notary seal impression is approved, the North Dakota Secretary of State will issue your commission certificate. You may begin performing notarial acts only after the commencement date listed on your commission certificate.
